Healing our lives and ourselves

A cultural overhaul is never easy. As a society we are caught up in an orientation to living that is in many ways disrespectful of the eco-social reality we are. The only way things can change is through the spreading through our population of a greater degree of awareness regarding which uses of our time truly serve our needs. It happens only on an individual basis. From moment to moment we each have choices before us that can potentially promote a sense of fulfillment in living the truth of this eco-social reality we share.

From moment to moment we each have choices before us that can potentially promote a sense of fulfillment in living the truth of this eco-social reality we share.

I was recently contacted by a graduate student who is leaving a Ph.D. program in Neuroscience in order to pursue a career in the healing arts, e.g., mindfulness, yoga, trauma/body work, EMDR, acupuncture, nutrition. This was a gift of a letter to me. How inspiring to read of someone who feels a need to escape from a deeply intellectual and academic momentum in scientific orthodoxy in order to serve in precisely the types of modalities we all need.

As the world is turning upside down, replete with so many institutions undergoing transformation, may we all keep in mind how challenging our current situation is. May we all be as discerning as ever to discover which uses of our precious bodies and minds will give us the experiences of fulfillment we want. And may we realize that our current personal and social challenges are accompanied by an unprecedented level of awareness of invaluable practices, such as those to be investigated by that awakening graduate student.
